GOLF COMMUNITY PROFILE
Shark's Tooth quite a catch

Boomers looking to put some distance between themselves and a major city when selecting a golf community, but still seeking access to a nearby international airport and the world beyond, may want to consider award-winning Greg Norman-designed Sharks Tooth Golf Club and its neighboring residential communities in Florida's Panhandle.

Major real estate developer St. Joe Co. (JOE) purchased Shark's Tooth GC and 28 fully developed Wild Heron home sites, additional land parcels and beach and tennis club facilities in late summer 2007. The acquisition allowed JOE to change the expected use of other developable JOE land in the area that had been previously planned as a future golf course, and use the land to develop approximately 300 additional home sites.

The purchase left JOE in control of several of the area's top golf courses in addition to the home sites in Wild Heron, which afford golf course and views of Lake Powell.

Shark's Tooth GC consists of an 18-hole golf course, 10-acre practice facility, 21,000-square-foot clubhouse and cart storage facility, 4,000-square-foot pro shop, turf care center, four lighted HydroCourt Har-Tru tennis courts and a private beach club.

The clubhouse contains a grill, bar, large dining room, restaurant and locker rooms. The beach club, with approximately100 feet of beachfront on the Gulf of Mexico, is approximately 3 miles from the community and includes beach access, a grill and bar, swimming pool and restroom facilities.

Golfweek recently named Shark's Tooth one of its "Best Residential Courses" for the fifth straight year since its opening in 2002. The Norman design stretches to 7,209 yards from the back tees and features five fairways that border scenic Lake Powell, which has been designated an Outstanding Florida Waterway. The Norman design is an Audubon International Silver Signature Sanctuary Course, among golf's highest environmental designations.

The holes along Lake Powell, such as Nos. 5 and 6 as well as Nos. 14 and 15, should find particular favor with players. They should also enjoy the par-4 12th hole, where the course begins to take on a decidedly different flavor with tall, tree-lined fairways replacing the flatter terrain and short oaks.

Shark's Tooth is part of the WaterColor Inn and Resort's premier golf collection, which also includes Camp Creek, designed by Tom Fazio, and The Origins Course at WaterSound, designed by Davis Love III. Two years ago Camp Creek captured "America's Top Golf Course" in the Zagat Survey.

Located 10 miles apart, Camp Creek and Shark's Tooth are private courses available only to course members and guests at the WaterColor Resort's 60-room boutique inn on the Gulf of Mexico and its luxury vacation rental homes in the WaterColor and WaterSound communities. The six-hole Origins Course - designed specifically for beginners and families - is open to the public. Juniors 15 years old and under play free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Boomers can select from a wide variety of resale, custom-built homes in the Wild Heron community that surrounds Shark's Tooth GC. There are also 28 premium lots available featuring views of Lake Powell and the course. In addition to the golf course, neighborhood amenities include a boathouse, health club, pool and grille, fire pit and playground.

A variety of nearby community colleges provide adult education opportunities. Deep-sea fishing is the leading activity in the area and attracts top anglers to area fishing events. Visitors with children can enjoy the many attractions of not only Panama City Beach, but Destin/Fort Walton as well.

A new airport, about 30 minutes away north of Panama City, is scheduled to open in 2010 and will provide direct-flight access to the East Coast, Midwest, Texas and elsewhere. Destin and Fort Walton are less than an hour away via Highway 98.

Prices for The Reserve residential area are available by calling 1-866-474-2751. Home and lot prices will vary greatly by builder and generally range from $550,000 to $2 million.

Boomer couples and families in search of relative seclusion and a gated community with an award-winning course should check out Shark's Tooth and its nearby residential areas.
