Quadra-tine

The greens at Shark's Tooth were last Quadra-tined on March 25th. This process is used to maintain the health of the turf. It involves removing soil cores and filling as many of the resulting holes as possible with sand. There are a number of different ways to accomplish this. We use a process that is less intrusive thereby leaving the greens much more puttable than the process most people use. The down side to our process is that it must be done more often. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the process that allows us to accomplish our turf health goals as well as produce the smoothest putting surface possible. We changed the process a little this time. This method gets more sand into the holes. Here is the process we used:

Topdress greens with a medium light application of topdressing sand, aerify with ¼” quad-tines on 1” X 1” center, let plugs dry, drag greens with steel drag mat pulled by the Boyhill sand rake (we let the air out of the tires to about 5 PSI), mow greens with John Deere 2500A diesel triplex with reels set at .140" using baskets (walk greensmower reels are set at .120” which is our present mowing height), roll greens with the Salsco roller, verticut greens (we let some of the air out of the tires to 12 PSI) – the verticut blades were set at 1/16” below the rollers, drag greens with the Greens Groomer brush pulled by a Club Car, water green for 3 minutes. The greens were rolled again the next morning but not mowed. The greens were rolled and mowed the following morning at .120" cutting height.
